Eliana Nelson was born in Athens, Greece and spend all her childhood there. After her studies in the UK, which ended with an MA in Ceramics in Cardiff, she has settled in a small village in green and rainy Somerset.
Eliana draws on clay. Ornamental, symbolic plaques and "book" forms provide the stage for her figurative and bird illustrations. Her inspiration comes from the arts, myths and experiences of Greece and many linked styles and traditions.
The pieces are modelled, drawn, and painted using sgraffito tools and coloured slips. They go through 2 or more firings and are sometimes reworked with colour in between. The final touch is to cover the unglazed work with a thin layer of oil to bring out the colour and protect the surface.
